I've completely lost my sidebar -- if that's the right term -- you know,
that thing with the gadgets. I don't even have that "+" or "-" thing at
the top. Could I inadvertently have turned it off? If so, where is the
switch?

in the search box write sidebar then click windows sidebar from results
the side bar will open

then go to the side bar icon next to the clock and right click it and
go to properties
and put a tick in " start sidebar when windows starts" and hit apply

all done

Click Start, type "sidebar.exe" and Press ENTER.

If Sidebar does not launch, then you need to register a couple of modules for the Sidebar to work correctly. See:

Of all the complicated and over detailed responses I found on the
internet, MS-MVP Ramesh, yours was the simplest and easiest to do. Got
right to the point and it worked beautifully. Don't know why I didn't
think to do that, but that is why there are people out there, like you,
to tell us how to do the simple things. – Thank You -
