My sound was working fine untill I installed Vista. Now, in the task bar, the
speaker icon is crossed with a red X with the message that there is no audio
device installed (¿?) There is no question mark on the device manager,
neither speakers... I asked SONY support (I have a six month old VAIO), but
they say that "because I changed the operating system, they will not give
support" (Be aware, sony computer users! even if you have a "Windows Vista
Capable" sticker)
Any suggestion?
thanks in advance

Have you tried doing a system restore to an earlier point before the problem
happened?

You need to check the soundcard manufactuerer's website for Vista compatible
drivers for your soundcard.

Vista capable only means the PC meets the minimum requirements to run Vista.
It doesn't mean that all the hardware has all the neccesary drivers and
software to run Vista as those drivers probably weren't even available when
the computer was manufactured.

I understand your anger, you spent a lot of money and now Sony won't even
offer support though they listed the computer as Vista capable and used that
as a selling point. However, the response from Sony was typical of most
manufacturers; that's SOP, standard operating procedure, with most
manufacturer's if you change the operating system on a computer they sell
you, it generally voids at least the support portion of their warranty
unless they provided you with the OS. In other words, they sold you the
computer and provided you with the operating system when it was available
and this was a part of the sales agreement.

You are right Michael, that's what they told.
My problem now is that I don't know what is the installad sound hardware. It
doesn't appear anyware in my computer. Will try to check this with sony.
Actually, I have updated a lot of drivers from, at least, known devices, but
with the sound, is a big question mark.

No it won't restore back to XP. It will restore back to any available
restore point available in Vista. Remember, Vista has replaced XP if you
upgraded to it.

This site has a free program called System Information for Windows it works
on Vista and gives you all kinds of info about your computer. It does not
have to be installed just run the exe file but right click and run as admin.
Look in the PCI section to see what kind of sound card you have then start
looking for vista drivers for it.

It's a neat little app, thanks for the find. To MikeE, with this applet,
you'll need to drill a bit as Sound and Audio are not listed under Hardware.
However, if you select PCI under Hardware, you can go through the various
slots and see what is installed you may just find your soundcard.

I found the solution, now sound is working.
I realised that althoug installing the audio driver update, the version for
the driver was still the old one, so I uninstalled it from device manager,
and installed a new one but pointing to the folder where I downloaded the
update.
Thanks for your help.
