Most recent laptops use removable hard drives. Possibly you can buy
an external USB drive enclosure that you can plug the HD from your old
laptop into and then you should be able to read teh files on it.
Another option would be to find someone with the same, or maybe
similar model, laptop and put your old drive in their laptop and see
if it boots.
