Vista 64 Ultimate/HP HDX 16 laptop
I can't get them back, right click start button, properties, notification
area, system icons - the three checkboxes are grayed out. Only the clock
checkbox is active... What to do? Thanks, --ch

Try to "kill" *explorer.exe* process bu pressing *ctrl+shift+esc*,find
explorer.exe and select end process, still don't close *Task Manager*.
Now go to File menu in Task Manager, select *New Tas (Run)* and type
explorer...press Enter.

Now you should see options un-grayed select them and click OK.Repeat
this with selecting and reselecting and then restart PC.

Worked for me

OK, that worked for now, thanks. Is this likely to re-occur often?
