lost word document in automatic update

While working on a Word document, I got repeated automatic update requests.
I kept clicking on "reboot Later." I left my computer for 5 minutes,
unfortunately with outsaving my work, and returned to find the computer had
rebooted. I brought up Word again, expecting to get a file recovery prompt
(I have the autorecovery settings set at every 10 minutes)...but no prompt.
I searched in the directory that should hold the recovered files...no file.
If anyone has a suggestion as to how (if possible) to retrieve the lost work,
I would appreciate it.

With all those warning messages, you did not do the smart thing of saving the Word file ?

Let this be a lesson to you, if it is important, save and save often !

Mr. Lipman,
I thought I had saved my work (I do so regularly), but for some reason I
neglected to do so on this occasion. I came to this forum with hope for a
sincere reply of help, not patronizing rudeness and sarcasm. You should not
be allowed to post on this forum.

Okay, we all forget every now and again to save work. The document is gone,
that's it, if you didn't save it - its gone.
Shorten the autorecovery settings to at least 5 mins. You can do a lot of
work in that time but don't rely on that alone. Save often.
You can set WU to download files and let you pick a time to install them -
that way you have control over the reboot process.

Googled this for you.

Doc regenerator. http://www.abstradrome.com/doc.html

Please note I havent tried this so I have no idea whether it will work. I
have downloaded it and it scans clean with AVG. They offer a free trial of
the product.

Get a good backup done and make sure your antmalware/virus is updated before
you try it.

I have just encountered the same problem.

I was updating a document upstairs that was saved on the computer downstairs
over our home network. I have autosave set for every 5 minutes. After the
update happened while I was putting my one year old to bed, I can't find any
trace of the document--it is as it was when I named it.

I'm thankful for the instructions for changing the settings for the
automatic update. Any help to find the hidden temporary back-up files would
be appreciated.

Thanks!

Sorry to reply to myself, but I realize the instructions are not on this
thread:

Search Windows Update for shut document
Find the thread subject: "I don't want Microsoft Update to shut do..." from
Dan Humiston on 3/15/07
Choose Jerry's post from 3/15/2007 to see what is copied here:

'Prevent Reboot' from Nov 7, 2006 issue of "PC Magazine" - page 135.

Edit the registry; open regedit - expand
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows. Right-click on
Windows and select New\Key with your left mouse. Type WindowsUpdate and
press Enter to create a new folder.
Now right-click on that folder and create another new key, this one named AU
and press Enter. (AU stands for AutoUpdate). Turn to the right-hand pane,
where an entry reads (Default); right-click on the white space and select
New DWORD Value. Enter the string NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers, and press
Enter. Nowq double-click that entry and change the Value Data to a 1, with
the Base button of Hexadecimal selected. Click on File | Exit and reboot.

Windows will now not ever force a reboot.

Try under recent documents (start menu) and also recent docs at the bottom
of the file menu in Word. Failing that try a search by file name, type (.doc
or .dot if its saved as a template) or date - you may need to "show hidden
files" under the view tab of folder options.

If you still cant find it one of the recovery programs may get it back but
if you are still using the computer the chances are getting slimmer as you
may be overwriting the traces. A google search brings up a few but someone
here might be able to recommend a tried and tested one.
