A lot of "stuff" in Task Scheduler --- WHY?

I notice that Task Scheduler has 26 different items
listed, and some of their names are cryptic.

The MMC and Task Scheduler HELP is ok, but doesn't
provide much to guide against malware or problems.

???

Install Windows OneCare - it will protect your computer
from malware:

Your computer is most likely infected. Do *not* install OneCare (which is
not a recommended antivirus solution anyway) or other antivirus until you
get the machine cleaned up. In all probability the installation will fail
anyway.

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware

Include scanning with David Lipman's Multi_AV and follow instructions to do
all scans in Safe Mode. Please see the special Notes regarding using
Multi_AV in Vista.

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Multi-AV - instructions
http://tinyurl.com/yoeru3 - download link and more instructions

When all else fails, get guided help. Choose one of the specialty forums
listed at the first link. Register and read its posting FAQ. PLEASE DO NOT
POST LOGS IN THE MS NEWSGROUPS.

Standard disclaimer: I can't see and test your computer myself, so these are
just suggestions based on many years of being a professional computer tech;
suggestions based on what you've written. You should not take my
suggestions as a definitive diagnosis. If you can't do the work yourself
(and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea), take the
machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local equivalent
of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Please be aware that not all local shops
are skilled at removing malware and even if they are, your computer may be
so infested that Windows will need to be clean-installed. If possible, have
all your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.

Avast! and Spybot, and external scanners, all report
this unit as "clean". And, I don't do risky things online.

I've googled some of the items in the Task Scheduler and
found no problem, but other names generate no response...

It's surprising that apparently similarly qualified and
skilled people have such diverse opinions of what should
be a common issue.

It is NOT even CLOSE to being a "common issue". It is quite unique.

you do not mention if it is branded computer (dell, hp, etc...) . it is not uncommon for such computers to have all kinds of weird unnecessary stuff installed.

you need to investigate what each and every one of the items is and how to get rid of it.

Visit this site and enter the name, if it doesn't have it, it is likely malware. http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/

THANKS -- some of the "stuff" is Sony-related, most is not.

Some is recognized and ok, most is not.

However, I do not have the ability to delete any of the
scheduled items! Again a new scan by Avast! and Trend
found nothing.

The machine seems to be running fine...

There is nothing wrong with having something around 20 plus items in the
Active Tasks list of the Task Scheduler window.
Just double click each one and the window opens to tell you more about each
task, such as who the Author of the task is and a description.
As far as I have checked on a clean installed system with very little third
party applications install a lot of tasks have a valid description and the
few that do not just look at the Actions tab and you will see what program
or command it is running. Many of these are just system level Microsoft
exe's that if you are still unsure of you can look at the properties of or
"Google" etc.
