Lots of odd folders left after Update

I am running Windows XP SP2. I have lots of odd empty folders on my C: drive.

For example:
MFHH6CX2.I4O8
5789U8U4.ZBC1
5BNARDFM.A6WH

Every time I delete them, similar ones return. I think that they are being
left after Windows update.
Any suggestions how to stop this happening would be appreciated

Where on C?
At the root?
Have you rebooted?
If so, they can USUALLY be safely deleted after a reboot.

Hi Jupiter, thanks for your reply.

These folders are all empty and are in the root of C:
I delete them, then a few days later others with similar names are there.
Sometimes up to 20 folders. It's very annoying that I keep having to delete
them.
