loud computer

-- my computer is a gateway computer that i bought a little over a year ago
and it is very loud....dont know why or what is causing this....sounds like
an engine revving up can anyone help me? i have windows vista ultimate

This sounds like a fan. If this is a desktop computer, open the case and run
it open. Observe the fans. If the machine is dirty, with it off and
unplugged, clean it carefully using compressed air.

You may need to replace the noisy fan.

If this is a laptop, you can clean it somewhat but you should call Gateway
tech support if the noise persists because you're not going to be able to
fix this yourself.

Do you hear the same sound all the time or only when you do specific
things? Is it a old sound that now is louder or something new you
haven't heard before?

Lots of things can make noise. A out of round or not properly seated
CD/DVD. One of the case fans or the fan on top of the CPU or the power
supply. The most troubling would be if the sound is coming from one of
your hard drives. That is almost always a sign the drive might fail
soon which would mean your data is at jeopardy.

Addendum - It could also be that you have a disk in the optical drive. If
you do, remove it. If the problem doesn't recur, then move on. If the noise
is caused by your optical drive and it does this with all disks, you may
need to replace the drive.

And that's the end of anything I can think of since you haven't provided any
further information.
