I just started using ie8 and was using hot mail I found out I could use live
instead of live hot mail. My question is when I click the mail button it
stills shows up hot mail.I set live as my default email but it didn't make
any difference

"Live" what?

There are:

Windows Live Mail (a desktop client, akin to MS Outlook Express.

Windows Live Hotmail (an online email service, accessible by browser or
client).

Anything else is personal shorthand which tells me exactly nothing, because
neither Microsoft, nor I created, or use it.

Some differences in how to set it up, depending upon which OS you are using:

Windows XP (if any Service Pack, please also state).
Windows Vista (if any Service Pack, please also state).
Windows 7

So please state which OS version you are using. And, just for completeness,
reiterate your version of MS Internet Explorer when you post the OS
information.

I was using windows live hot mail now I switched to windows live. Am using
IE8. In the window live tool bar it had a mail button when I clicked on it
windows live hot mail would come up. Now that I switched to windows live how
can I make the mail button activate windows live. I just got this new laptop
and trying to learn IE8. I did find where I can make windows live my default
email but it didn't make any difference when I clicked the mail button the
windows live hot mail stilled showed up.

Hi, kln.

Norman asked:
> "Live" what?

And you responded with "I switched to windows live." And then, "Now that I
switched to windows live how can I make the mail button activate windows
live."

So, I will ask the same question that Norman asked and you did not answer:
Windows Live WHAT?

Windows Live Mail?
Windows Live Hotmail?
Windows Live Movie Maker?
Windows Live Messenger?
Or...WHAT?

If you MEAN Windows Live MAIL, please SAY Windows Live MAIL!

Sorry to YELL, but Norman used lowercase and that didn't work. :>(

Let me try this one more time:

"Windows Live" refers to a suite of related products.

"Windows Live Hotmail" refers to a web mail service (it is not, "hot mail"!)

Internet Explorer shows a different Options menu, depending upon whether it
is running under Windows XP, or Windows 7.

I can guess that your "windows live" is actually "Windows Live Mail", and
that your "hot mail" is actually "Windows Live Hotmail". But beyond that, my
directions would depend upon whether you are running Windows XP, or Windows
Vista, or Windows 7. I can't guess; because, if I did I would have a good
chance of getting it wrong.

Now, when you can learn how to disambiguate your installed products and
services, please feel free to continue your plea for assistance. Thank you.

In IE8 go to, Tools - Internet Options - Programs tab - Set Programs
button - last option, "Set program access and computer defaults"
(W7-specific) - select "Custom" and click the double down arrow at far
right - set all three to the first option, "Use my current . . . " and CHECK
all three checkboxes (well, only the middle one applies to Windows Live
Mail, but it can't hurt to take care of all three while you're doing this).
If you've set Windows Live Mail as your default email client in the normal
"Set your default programs", this will enable the "Send Page" and "Send
Link" features in IE8. There's something more specific in IE8 with that
"Set program access and computer defaults" . . . . . .

The Windows Live Toolbar installs on your browser. The Mail button is applicable to Windows Live Hotmail not Windows Live Mail.
