Mail will not delete

Suddenly my deleted items on e-mail will not empty. It wont empty on
closing, it wont empty if I click on empty deleted folder, and it wont empty
by using select all and delete. It worked fine until about a week ago and
now it is full to bursting and I cant even get it to delete one at a time.
Any suggestions? (It gives me an error message : "an unknown error was
encountered")

The messages are stored in the format of <subject text>.nws. You should be
able to search for that, and delete the files individually.

Try posting here, I had a problem with my email and they sorted it out for
me :-

No delete available on menu and delete key won't function

Try the Vista.Mail NG as your problem has been discussed with solution.

Please post in "microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail"
