I am trying to clear all my newsgroup history with the maintence option.
It runs thru the motions ....just doesn't erase nothing.

How do I get it to erase or is there another way to clear my mewsgroup
history

I see you are using Windows Mail. Mine doesn't HAVE any sort of
"maintenance" option - where are you seeing this?

Maintenance is under: Tools > Options > Advanced > Maintenance. I have the
box checked to Delete news messages 10 days after being downloaded. This
does not appear to work.

Whoops - missed that one. How do you mean "doesn't erase anything"?

I don’t understand which files you’re trying to delete but you can go to your
Windows Mail Folders and get access to many of your Mail files there. The
AppData folder is usually hidden. I’m assuming you know how to reveal hidden
files.

C:\Users\gary\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail

Hope this helps.

It's on the "Advanced" tab.

Tools - Options - Advanced - Maintenance

there's the option to delete read newsgroup messages after a certain time
period.

If you don't subscribe to too many groups you could select a block of
messages and then Edit > Delete.

Tool > Options > Advanced > Maintenance > Clean up now > Delete
deletes everything for me but I usually use a rule to get rid of only
those messages older than 10 days every so often.

Tools > Message rules > News. The rule is -

Apply this rule after the message arrives
Where the message was sent more than 10 days ago
Delete it
and Stop processing more rules

Then 'Apply Now'. Strangely you have to select the rule again if you
need to 'Browse' to whichever other folder(s) you wish to zap with that
rule, OK the selection and then 'Apply now'. It's fairly quick to do
once you have created the rule and it can work on a whole hierarchy of
groups, e.g. Microsoft Communities, in one go. The rule has no effect
in real time of course.

Jeff, I don't use it myself but it may be that windows mail does mark
the messages for deletion but does not actually remove them until it
does a "Compact" run automatically or you start one manually.

Even deleted emails aren't removed until compaction takes place, they
are just marked for deletion and made invisible.
