Major collapse after Service Pack 2 install!

Last night Windows Update prompted me to install SP2. I started the process,
and when it said it was complete I shut down for the night. Nothing else was
open or running at the time.

This morning I started my machine and was unable to get Windows to run - I
had close 90 reboots in a row, where it never made it to the desktop. I know
people who've had similar issues before, but none of them had a solution as
to how to get my machine to a point where I could uninstall SP2.

I had to go ahead and do a new install of XP on my D drive just to get up
and running again (had work to do from home), and now that I've done so I
still can't get my original XP install to work and therefore can't get rid of
the Service Pack.

I tried to go to a recovery point where the machine last worked properly,
but of course since I'm running the new version of XP just installed today it
has no 'history'/'memory' of my machine before the install.

Please offer some suggestions - this is really frustrating and my knowledge
level isn't up to the troubleshoot. I run XP Home but had to install XP Pro -
it's all I had lying around.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike;
How to use the Automatic Recovery feature to recover your computer if
the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup program is not completed
successfully:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=875355

Reboot tapping F8 each second.
Select "Last known good configuration" at the menu.
If that fails, reboot tapping F8 again this time choosing Safe Mode.
Then System Restore to Date/Time before issue started:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore

Otherwise perform a Repair Installation:

When you are ready for SP-2, follow the Service Pack Installation

The manufacturer is required to provide a way to restore the original
configuration.
They did not provide a CD, did they provide a Product Key?
Usually a 1" x 3" sticker affixed to the computer.
If not you may not have a legitimate license of Windows XP:
