Major Issue After Updates 8/15/2005

Since installing the updates 8/15/05 via Windows Update(including
KB8966727,KB890830) we are experiencing very strange behaviour on our Windows
2000 (SP4) Server w/ Exchange SP3 (and additional software)

I.Explorer no longer works, cannot view/configure network connections (in
Network Settings/ or IE network connections), Exchange Managment service
hangs on start, and - to make matters worse - removal of hotfixes hangs on
inspecting config, as does running Service packs for W2K/Exchange

Cannot boot into Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Networking - hangs on loading
NUP.sys

I really need, and would appreciate some help!! Many thanks in advance...

Steve

Hey Pika:

Hopefully this will help you - I got it from a W2K General Post. If you're
running APC Powerchute 6.x:

Steve!

you must be my guardian angle! I can't believe that outdated #$@%@ APC
software caused me so much stress these past few weeks! initially i thought
it was some kind of a virus so scanned the server so many times it isn't even
funny. I was very lucky to come across your post...not sure what led me to
check the MS forum but glad that i check here. I was about to reinstall the
OS on all 3 servers. two of them running Exchange 2000. just imagine the
problems i will run into after the reinstalling the OS...my god!

i could not even go into safe mode to disble the service so I had to boot
from the CD and use the recovery console and disable the APC service via the
command line. did a reboot and the server was flying...fast..fast..could not
believe my eyes.

it appears everythings back to normal...still can't believe that little
application caused so much problems.

thanks for sharing the info and helping someone in need...

Does anyone know if this would also apply to Windows SBS 2003?

I had similar problems where the server would not restart properly. It
would hang at "Applying Computer Settings" and not get a login on the
console. Workstations could log in but local applications that required a
login would not start.

Yes, APC is most likely the issue. That is exactly what happened with
out server 2003 machine.
