How to make declined automatic updates stay away

I find that when I decline some automatic updates, they being re-offered
(often again on the same day!).

Does anyone know how to make declining of updates work?

Not sure if this will work (I'd almost bet it won't with HIGH PRIORITY
CRITICAL updates) but since no-one else has offered suggestions.....

The funny thing is, a couple of days after I posted the question, the
declined updates stopped re-appearing! (on their own -- I did nothing).

If it happens again I'll try your suggestion.
