How to make default filemanager behave like xp

I'm a recent victim of microsoft having cornered the market on what is
available on a new laptop at `Circuit City' and `Best Buy' these days.

In a hurry and not wanting to waste time I accepted a model with vista
home premium. (I'd have preferred xp pro).

But cutting to the chase here.. I'd like to make windows explorer
display things like the XP version did and have the stuff I want to
see be obvious instead of buried behind vistas notion of what I want.

I never use the useless catchall folders like Documents, pictures etc.

But there they are right at the top and totally useless.

None of the stuff I want is available easily and all I can see to do
is actually edit the address field to get around where I want to go.

Totally unhandy.

Even the way you used to be able to create shortcuts
with things "C:\Windows\explorer.exe /e C:\Somthing" in the
properties/target field so the shortcut would open at a specific
location, no longer works or does anything at all.

What can I do to reclaim my file manager in some way that is actually
useful?

Currently I just ditched it altogether and installed xplorer^2. But
really I would like to have the built in filemanger be usefull.

Right click the desktop and create shortcuts to wherever you like.

To hide the Favorite Links, position your mouse pointer over the top border of
the Folders pane. Your mouse pointer should turn into a double headed arrow.
Drag the Folders pane upward until it hides the Favorite Links.

For more info, take a look at this article.

As for creating shortcuts, you left out the trailing comma after /e. Try this
command.

C:\Windows\explorer.exe /e, C:\FolderName

Good luck
