Hi,
I have installed a non - microsoft mail program (incredimail) on my wifes
PC. (Vista Business) and have tried to make it the default mail program:
1. In the " tools - options " menu of incredimail, check the "make default
mail program " box, which results in an error "you do not have administrator
rights etc" (I am logged on as Administrator.)
2. in the control panel : default programs, I choose "non Microsoft"
programs & check Mail program. It does not make incredimail the default AND
I lose the use of Internet Explorer.
I hope someone can help, as when using the "send to > Mail reciprient or
when downsizing photos, Windows mail starts instead of Incredimail.
Many thanks,
Eddie

Installing Incredimail is a very, very, very bad idea!! The bells and
whistles are not needed and are misleading. Sooner or later your wife's PC
will slow down to a crawl.
My advise: stick with the built-in WinMail, additionally you may wish to
consider the usage of G-Mail.

As much as I partially agree, I wouldn't want that e-mail program on any one
of my machines, I don't see anything particularly harmful about it. I see
plenty annoying about it, but nothing harmful.

So why should he *not* be able to use that program as his default?

It's his pc...it should be his choice, not MS'.

Indeed -- there are other email programs like Virtual Access that I use
to access the newsgroups here.

I'm not puffing it but I've seen queries elsewhere about not being able
to get Windows Mail to accept something else as the default.

Any thoughts on his basic problem?

1: This is because you did not right-click "Run as Administrator" when you
ran Incredimail. Try that and it should work.
2: You should find it slightly easier to use the Set Default Programs
registration if they registered for that - it doesn't sound like they did...
? Did they register for the Set Program Access and Defaults registration?

It doesn't sound like Incredimail is very Vista-compatible - you might want
to check with them about this. The steps they need to do are fairly easy,
but it does require some level of vendor support. MSDN should cover how
they can register for the Default Programs options.

Thanks Zach. I tried your suggestion, without success ( incredimail locked
up) I wonder if this should have been done at the original installation
rather than now. I am reluctant to uninstall and reinstall as I dont wish to
lose the email data.

That sucks - usually you can get away with reinstalling over the top of the
existing install, but if you don't want to go that route, you should point
the Incredimail people to:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa969375.aspx
, which covers how to register for Default Programs. It's actually really
easy to do.

Incredimail is a fun program. =)

It looks like fun, but if you decide to switch and of course want to keep
your old emails, try this:
http://email.about.com/cs/incredimai...t/et012403.htm

If you do switch, I'd recommend Gmail.
