HOw to make sure I have windows update 5

I don't remember specifically downloading it, but when attempting to use
windows update i cannot get past the page "Checking for latest version of
windows update" even though all my windows update links point me to
v5.windowsupdate.com...

Well, that is the exact problem. But I do not have zonealarm or any firewall
up that I know of...

Well that's a separate problem. You should never be online without a
firewall. Check your system for malware.
