One of four automatic downloads failed to install. When I log on to search
updates, I'm told there are none available. It shows in the history site with
a red check mark. How do I find it?

Thanks, RICH

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista x64 SP2) when
posting to this newsgroup.

What errors (if any) are associated with the failed installs?

Thanks for the reply. We have XP SP3. The error code is 0x800706BE. Does this
help?

0x800706BE RPC_S_CALL_FAILED = The remote procedure call failed.

Checkpoints:

Make sure the services mentioned below are not disabled on startup:

Go to Start > Run > type in : service.msc
Click OK or press Enter

Automatic Updates /Automatic

Background Intelligent Transfer Service / Manual or Automatic

Remote Procedural Call (RPC) / Automatic
Also click on the Log On tab and ensure that there is a Profile listed under
Hardware Profile and that it is Enabled.

What TaurArian said. (You may be seeing signs of a hijackware infection.)

See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.aspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to, e.g., SCAN.EXE or GEORGE.EXE before running it.

Downloaded and installed manually without a hitch. Thank you so much for that
prompt and courteous attention.

You should be good to go then, Rich. If the same thing happens when the
August version of MSRT is released on 11 August 2009, something's very
wrong.
