Malicious software removal too keeps installing

Hi,

The yellow icon that says 'updates are ready to be installed' appears in my
notification area, I click on it and it installs the Malicious Software
Removal tool. However within a minute the yellow icon is back and I look to
see what updates are ready to install and it's the same tool. This keeps
repeating and I'm going round in circles.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Go to the Windows Update web site, and click on View Update History.

See if there are any red crosses (failed) against this attempted update. If
so, click on the red corss to retrieve diagnostic information and post it
here in a followup.

I kept seeing the icon as you have described almost every boot up. Finally
last nite I decided to check my history to see what was going on. My
“history” indicates with “ green checkmarks” that I have successfully updated
“Def Update 1.14 1452.3 for BETA Windows Defender (K8915597) via “Automatic
Update” a total of 21 times over various dates (sometimes on multiple
occasions on the same date) and have via “Automatic Updates” successfully
installed the “Malicious Software Removal (KB890830) a total of 4 times (once
each in Feb., Mar., Apr., and May). This is crazy and it just keeps going.
Does anyone have an idea how to turn this “off”; further, how can I remove
all of these files (where are they, Windows apparently isn’t seeing them
hence the Updates). Thanks.

The MSRT is re-issued with updates every month - which is why you have
installed it 4 times
WRT the Defender updates.... I suspect that the same applies there, but
you'd need to ask in the specialist Defender groups, as it's a Beta product

Been to windows update histoy and there have been no failed updates. Just
loads of 'Windows Malicious Softare Tool - May 2006 (KB890830)' updates.

Does this help?
