Last friday I ran update and got the malicious software removal tool as one
of the the updates. Shortly after my computer froze up. I had to turn it off
at the button and restart, after 5 min it froze again, turn off at button and
restart. 5mins frooze again. I tried pulling out the power cord for 5min to
do a cold reboot, no joy, and shutting it down properly in the 5min didn't
help. The problem then just went away.

Today (monday) at about the same time as I installed the tool on friday, my
computer froze, I had to turn it off then it started the freeze after 5min
thing again. I ran the system monitor and found it was when a file MRT.exe
started in the process list. So after i reboot i tried this file and sure
enough it froze. MRT.exe is the microsoft malicious software removal tool.

I noticed on a search in here that many other unknown freezes with windows
update occured when MRT was one of the updates.

I know it can't be uninstalled but it still tries to start up most times i
start my system (I tried renaming it and it just made a new copy).

I am running a Dell Gx150 with Windows 2000 sp4.

Jon,

See if this MSKB article sheds any light on the issue :

You receive an error when you run the Microsoft Windows Malicious
Software Removal Tool
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891717

You're welcome, Jon. The question still remains, why is the tool trying
to run again ? Have you used MSConfig to see if it's listed under
Startup Items ?
Which antivirus program is installed ?
