Windows auto update ran, found two and installed them.
KB890175 and
Malware Remover which required accepting the EULA.

In Add/Remove I see patch KB890175 but no sign of the "Malware Remover".

Where can I find info on this. How to find it, how to use it, how it works???

Thanks,
eeh

Malicious software removal tool:

Not intended to be a substitute for your anti virus software.

http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

If installed via Windows Update, the tool runs in silent mode.
You will find a file named MRT.LOG file in the ..\Windows\Debug folder that
gives a report of the scan.

It is an Internet worm tool that searches for the following...

Win32/Berbew
Win32/Doomjuice
Win32/Gaobot
Win32/Msblast
Win32/Mydoom
Win32/Nachi
Win32/Sasser
Win32/Zindos

However, the tool is ONLY for; Win2K, WinXP and Win2003 Server.

Taurarian,
Thanks for the info. Cleared that confusion.

Two questions if you can help further.
1. Will the "Malicious software removal tool" find items that PC-Cillin
would not find?
2. Does the "Malicious software removal tool" stay resident and scan
incoming traffic for these items or only scan on boot finding them after
they've been there a while?

Thanks again,
eeh

The tool is not a substitute for an anti virus program. It only scans for the viruses
mentioned below.
Apart from what I've already said, I don't know anymore about it. It appears to only
run once when downloaded from WU. You can always check your system manually from the
link provided.
I have no idea what it does when it finds a virus as my system is clean.
