How to Manage Vista Security Updates

I plan to purchase a new Dell XPS 630 computer with the Vista Business
Edition. I currently have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP
Pro. Each month, I manually download the applicable security updates,
disconnect from the internet, disable NAV, ZA, BoClean, and then manually
install each security update and reboot as necessary. When I had the
computer setup for automatic updates, my computer seemed to have a lot of
problems because I was on line and had the security programs running.
Unfortunately this procedure is a bit time consuming.

Is Vista capable of accepting security updates for installation while still
connected to the windows update web site and the internet?? Would
appreciate any comments and suggestions as to the best way for managing the
Vista security updates. Thanks, Sam.

Vista version of Windows, the Windows Update website has been replaced by Windows Update
in Control Panel

Perhaps this will answer some questions:-

Many thanks for the excellent information and especially the tutorials at
the web site!!

I should have been more clear in my question - In windows XP, one could
enable the Automatic feature of the windows update on the computer which
would automatically download and install the updates, while still being
connected to the internet. However, my experience was that having a major
download and install of these security updates, while still being connected
to the internet with the computer security programs being also enabled,
generally caused some problems of corruption. So that was the reason I used
the procedure I described in my original post.

So my question - is it safe to enable the Vista Update Automatic feature on
my computer so that any existing/applicable security updates on the windows
update web site, will automatically download and install on my computer
while my computer is still connected to the internet? Thanks for any
additional help, Sam.

I have mine set to download updates and let me choose whether to install them.
I've also included recommended updates etc and I use Microsoft Update.
This is on the laptop, not the computer I'm using now.
I've had no problems so far with the laptop.

If you're concerned you can always do a manual scan, see what you need and then downloand
and install offline -

For just the current listing:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx

For security and other patches released for a given month :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms##-***.mspx
Replace ## with the two-digit year
Replace *** with the three character month abbreviation

Providing there are releases for that month, you will see the list of "critical"
"important" patches for that month
Check on the 2nd Tuesday of each month - later in the day.

Search for a download
