Managing the interminable startup sequence

Vista takes a long time to start up, even if you don't count the error
messages of the type "The Camera Connection Wizard has found a webcam more
than 3 months old". Then there's the antivirus update, Windows update (so
your applications become incompatible and have to be re-downloaded),
reminders about time-expired shareware, etc.

Sometimes, all I want to do is check my mail. Is it possible to configure
Vista so it goes about its business in the order *I* decide, for example by
launching the mail reader early in the sequence?

Regards

First thing I would check is the Event Viewer to see if there are any logged
reports that could probably give a clue as to what might be causing the
performance issues.

I would do a disk clean up, download and install the latest device drivers
for your system, run a system scan with your Antivirus and Antispyware
utility. Also, make sure your applications and are up to date.

Open the Run Command (Windows key + R), select the 'Startup' tab uncheck any
unnecessary programs that might be starting up with the system.

I've done all that. However, It should not be necessary to update all my
applications everytime Microsoft messes around with my system, which is very
often. I have work to do. Another point, sometimes you get nag messages
because you are using (legitimately) limited versions of shareware
applications; I just want the nag to load after my priority applications,
not before.

BTW how do you get rid of that Camera Connection Wizard message? Why doesn't
Vista so-called help tell you how to do it?

What startup tab? On my installation of Vista (so-called family so-called
premium, in French) Run Command does nothing but run commands.
