I run XP Pro+SP1. When I try and install the Microsoft hotfix for
the 'VIA Rhine Ethernet Adapter' it fails to get applied.

Seems the problem is known by VIA and Micorsoft:

"We are aware of this issue and we're following up
with Microsoft for them to resolve the issue.

The fix: Go to the Windows update website and scan
for optional updates. The VIA Rhine 2 Faster Ethernet
Controller should be listed as an option. Download it
and install via the Windows update website instead of
via the automatic update notification and it will work"

&threadid=63606&enterthread=y

However when I go to the Microsoft update site at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx
then I can not find this to download.

You should try searching the MS Download Center website.
The link is http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/

Scroll down the page to see the "Search for a Download".

Yes I have tried that website and the download does not appear to
be there.

I challenge you to find it there.

That link you have given me is substantially the same as the one I
was using.

For some reason it seemt that the Microsoft search facility can
not locate this patch. And yet I know it is a patch which
Microsoft provides.

Start -> All Programs -> Windows Updates -> Custom Install -> Select

If you don't see it there try

Why would I want to since I don't have the hardware that needs that
driver?

According to the link you gave, AU was giving notification for the "VIA
Technologies, Inc. network software update released on December 12
2003." Why would you want to install that old driver in the first
place, moron?

Oh, and I did find the drivers in MS's Windows Update Catalog, so much
for your BS challenge.

The original post that you link to is for Win ME - not XP!!
However....
Have you actually tried the motherboard manufacturer's website for the
correct drivers for your system?
Download and run Everest Home Edition (www.lavalys.hu) and follow the link
that you'll find under the Motherboard|Motherboard heading - and download
the drivers from there.

Face saving nonsense. If you found it then you would copy the
