How to manually remove KB917422?

Like Van this update has messed up my Oxford English Dictionaryu and I want
to get rid of it.

Doubly unfortunately, because of a bug in System Restore with large USB
memory sticks I have no System Restore History... and owing to a previously
corrupted MS update 917422 is not available in the Add/Remove programs list,
even though the windows update site says it was correctly installed.

Can anyone advise how to manually uninstall it and reinstate files etc. (I
believe kernel32.dll and mpr.dll were updated... current versions are
5.1.2600 .2945 & .2180 respectively, which appear to be the versions
installed by 917422)

Thanks in anticipation,

Julian

go to your C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB917344$\spuninst or
C:\WINNT\$NtUninstallKB917344$\spuninst dir and execute spuninst.exe This
will uninstall

Try System restore? date before install of patches.

Ok last resort .. the two files replaced in the install were kernel32.dll &
mpr.dll

boot to safe mode

ren kernel32.dll in both the windir\system32 & windir\system32\dllcache
folders

then copy files from either the windir\$NtUninstallKB917422$ or
windir\$NtUninstallKB841533$
folders to the windir\system32 & dllcache folders

good luck

System restore fubar'd (XP bug with respect to large removable media... 1GB
memory stick causes SR to fall over and lose all traces - unless handled with
kid gloves and the precision of brain surgeon)...

I like the file replacement suggestion and will give it a go... didn't know
where to find pre 917422 files - thanks. [Of course, when I want to reinstate
917422...? Hmmm! Ah! Since windows doesn't know it's installed, I can
"re"install over the existing one!]

Will report back later [and since USB stick not in use at the weekend I will
make a System Restore point beforehand!]

Thanks again,

Julian

Damn!

Re: manually replace kernel32 and mpr dll's

I don't have old copies of kernel32.dll or mpr.dll in either place specified
(or anywhere else, I looked) - this XP is ~1 year old and my oldest patch is
KB873333, and there is neither file in the windir\$NtUninstallKB917422$
folder or subfolders [though I can find kernel32 in
C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB917422\SP2QFE it is also v 5.1.2600.2945 which I think
is not the version I am looking for...]

I have two other XP installations available, neither of which have had these
patches installed yet... I think... what versions of kernel32 and mpr should
I be looking for? If I can find the right versions on the other machines
maybe I can copy them across...

<sigh> It's such a wonderful way to spend a couple of days </sigh>

On the other hand, whilst this is a pain in the backside, it pales compared
to the difficulty of unscrewing a Nokia PIC Suite installation...

If you have the patience for the file version info it would be much
appreciated!

Thanks

Julian

Successfully removed KB917422!

I checked my desktop machine and it had already installed KB917422, but
running SPUNINST removed it [NB... KB917422 was not in the Add/Remove
programs list on this machine either. Microsoft: why is this???]

I then checked the file versions and they were both 5.1.2600.2180... and I
then successfull ran OED V3.1, so I zipped up the kernel32.dll and mpr.dll
and transfered them to the laptop.

Allowing myself a bit of paranoia, I created System Restore checkpoint AND
then created myself a bootable XP CD using BartPEBuilder [nice... worked
first time]... booted from that and then used the command prompt to rename
the dlls in system32 and the dllcache... and copy the pre-917422 dll files to
the right places.

Rebooted and... it works! And so does the OED.

Thanks for your help... and a thumbs up for BartPEBuilder (based on this
somewhat limited experience... YMMV is, I believe, the appropriate caution!)
