How many friggin' updates ARE there?

For the past half an hour, I've been clicking the Updates that Microsoft
tells me I need. It installs and registers them, then finds yet another one.
Is there a way to just get them all in one shot, instead of repeatedly
installing them one by one?

Also, when I go to my Updates history, the updates that were supposedly just
installed don't show up!

Any ideas?

I have this too. I'm starting to worry it may be a virus or some spyware. The
little updates icon keeps loading in the systray when I start windows, but
when I try to click it nothing happens. It also disappears after a minute or
so. Any ideas of what it could be?

Nope. It does that because you install an update, then once it's installed
notices it's there and suggests updates for the new system configuration.
You can't apply an update to something that isn't installed yet.

Go to the Windows Update or Microsoft Update web site: that should fetch the
whole lot of pending updates in one go.

That suggests that there is something wrong with your Windows installation.
Has there ever been any malware on this PC?

No it will not, it will fetch the updates for what is currently installed on
the PC at the time, there may be updates to the updates which it won't try
to install untill the first update is installed. Take .net for example, if
you go to windows update and install the .net framework, then go back to
windows update it will want to install security updates for .net, which it
was not suggesting before because .net wasn't installed.

Go here http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showforum=89 and download the
latest AutoPatcher for XP - is is a large file but all the updates, up to
its release date, are in one package.
