Many Problems With Vista Sync Center

Hi - I'm having many issues with the new Sync Center (Windows Mobile Device
Center) software being used with Windows Vista. I'm thinking that it has to
do with software compatibility issues when syncing between the following:

1. My Home PC - Windows Vista w/ Sync Center & MS Outlook 2007
2. My Work PC - Windows XP SP2 w/ ActiveSync 4.5 & MS Outlook 2007
3. My HP iPAQ PDA - Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Edition w/ Active Sync

I'm wondering if others are having similar issues and/or if I'm just missing
something obvious (maybe a software upgrade needed on my PDA?). This all
worked fine before I upgraded my home PC from XP SP2 to Vista a few weeks
back. Here's a summary of the issues that I'm hitting:

A. Conflict resolution - when I update items on different devices & sync to
my home PC, Sync Center does not detect the conflicts. Instead it overwrites
the items on my mobile device and is losing my updates. It does not allow me
to chose what version to keep.

B. Sync Center deletes calendar entries when rescheduling - if I reschedule
a calendar item on my work PC or PDA, my home PC has issues and deletes the
items completely!

C. Sync Center skipping/overwriting PDA tasks when moving target dates -
again Sync Center blows away PDA changes & replaces them w/ old copies from
Vista PC; does not warn of conflict & allow for choice to resolve

D. Sync Center not handling closed tasks - if I close a task on my PDA or
work PC, it does not get synced to my home PC - despite the fact that I have
set Sync Center to sync all tasks (including closed items)

E. Can't close/complete PDA tasks after syncing w/ Vista pc – PDA runs out
of memory w/ nothing else running; to work around this, I need to sync the
PDA with my XP SP2 machine, which appears to reset some flag on the device to
fix the issue.

F. Can't have blank start date for tasks on PDA after Vista sync - PDA sets
start date = complete date & can't change 1 without affecting the other;
again to fix this, I need to sync the PDA with my XP SP2 machine, which
appears to reset some flag on the device to fix the issue.

I am an IT professional and have been in this industry for about 15 years.
While I'm not surprised that there are some issues (it comes with the
territory for being an early adopter of new technology), I'm still shocked
that there are so many issues with this and Vista in general. It kind of
reminds of what things were like with Windows ME! I’m kind of wishing that I
had just waited for Vista SP1 to come out first before upgrading. Please help.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi,
Here's some answers:

1. WMDC does not allow the user to make decisions on a per conflict basis.
You can only decide which one will be overwritten - the PC or the device.
This is the same for ActiveSync 4.x as well.
2. As for the tasks, keep in mind that the tasks are synchronized from the
device to the first PC when they appear completed so they won't be there
again to sync to the second PC.

Have you called the OEM of your Windows Mobile device for support? They are
responsible for supporting you with WMDC and ActiveSync.

Unfortunately this does not help. This all worked before I upgraded to Vista
- including the ability to select and resolve conflicts at the item level and
handle completed tasks across muliple PCs and the device. I have also had
other people contact me since I posted this - I'm not the only person having
these issues.

Hi,
Please file a complaint with your OEM regarding the way Windows Mobile
Device Center synchronizes. Also, you can e-mail to
ask for the features to be restored.
