Many processes of iexplore.exe in task manager

I have IE 8 with XP pro sp3. I had to close my pc because threre was 20
active processes of iexplore.exe in task manager. I just turned on my pc
and and open Outlook Express. Without opening any web pages or other
application I have 4 instances of iexplore.exe. What's seem to be the
problem and how do I solve this. That is the first time I see that.
