Hello Macbak,

Is it possible you reverted your system to old backups or an older restore point (say to a date before April 11)?

I'll take your statement on face value. But 23 times is very hard to conceive of. One imagines there had to be some failures there.

Can you do one more run at Windows Update website or Microsoft Update website. Do an express scan. See if this item is offered again?

Bring up Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options/ select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed.

"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.

Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders.
Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.
Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.

Find update log named WindowsUpdate.log in C:\Windows (or C:\WINNT)

Find KB908531.log in same folder

I am not sure if you can attach those 2 files in a reply since you are using the communities web interface.
I hesitantly & rarely ask for someone to send their logs. But your case seems intriguing. send me an email to mauriceDOTnaggarATgmailDOTcom and attach copies of those 2 files.
This offer is only extended to Macbak.

Also let me know how you have your Automatic Updates set. Is it for automatic download and update?
Of the 23 times, are these different dates? or do you see 2 per day?
IIRC, viewing update history at Windows Update does show whether it is Automatic Update or not. Double check.

N.B. The first release of 908531 was on Tuesday April 11. Then on April 25 MS released a re-engineered version.
If your system profile fit the requirements for April 25, I can see your system having a 2nd entry.

Suggest you flush your Automatic Updates download folder, and also set Automatic Updates to notify only.
Housekeeping and cleanup steps:
Bring up Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options/ select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed.

"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.

Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders.
Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.
Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.

Use Windows Explorer. Go to C:\Windows\System32

If you have a sub-folder called * Catroot2 * (not Catroot) rename the
folder to CR2OLD. Or delete everything in that folder. Just make sure you do the right one.

(to clean up downloaded files for Automatic updates / Windows Update)
From main Windows Start menu, select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter-key>

type in
net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>

Go to Windows Explorer.
Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder name. Like Windows or WINNT.
Modify following as appropriate.
If your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are stored from W U downloads.

Go back to Command prompt window.
type in
net start wuauserv <Enter-key>

EXIT <Enter-key>

Tweak your settings for Automatic Updates:
I'd advise, if you are using automatic updates, you configure it to "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them". e.g. do not have it on "full auto".

With this setting, you *must* look and follow-up on these notifications. Do not ignore them since at least each month there are updates that your system should have.

To get to your settings, highlight / single click My Computer on your desktop > do a RIGHT-Click > select Properties.
Then click on the Automatic Updates tab.

HOW TO: Configure Automatic Updating in Windows XP - 306525

With this setting, you *must* look and follow-up on these notifications. Do not ignore them since at least each month there are updates that your system should have.

Hi Maurice
It been more like 28 times...but thanks to you i have id the issue..
It seems one of my anti spyware programs is removing it when it trys to
run...it seems part of the update is a program called Verclsid.exe, my
spyware says it's a hijacker by KeenValue.Incredifind...so it deletes it
after it has been installed, so next night the auto update downloads it again
to be installed and then removed by the spyware...any idea why it's been
flaged as spyware/hijacker

Thanks for this information - this might be useful for others. Can you tell
us which brand of anti-spyware application it was that was having this
effect.

Please report this as a "False Positive" to the vendor of your anti-spyware
application: only they can make the necessary corrections.
