many services will not start

Hello All,

I've been going crazy on this machine. It was brought to me by someone who
thought they had some "RedDwarf" virus. So I took a look at the machine.
Could not find any bugs spyware, virus or worms on the machine. I was able
to locate in the event log, that when they were trying to use thier 2wire
installation disk because they could not get online, a RedDwarf program
listed as being part of Motive Software... I belive they do the programming
for 2Wire. Anyway.... it was installed in compatiblity mode... after
rebooting the machine.. this is what happens...

When booting normally to the desktop.. desktop loads, AIM loads, no network
of any kind. Only a handfull of services start RPC, COM+, DCOM, SENS,
GroupPolicy, User Profile, Software Licensing, and a few more... and I mean
a few. No other services will start on the computer. I have used system
restore going back almost 2 months with the same effect. I can only get
programs to run in safe mode.. While the computer is in safe mode, every
thing that is supposed to work, works great. In normal boot, small 3rd part
apps will not run at all, run scanner, the vista setup dvd ( I would like to
perform a upgrade repair). When trying to start services I get the 1053
error that is not responding. I've checked directory security on the drive,
check disk, defender and Live One care would not start, disabled defender,
and used a manual removal tool in safe mode to remove One Care. Nothing is
being writen to the event log for why the services are not starting. The
only thing in the event log, is gp, sens, and system event can not handle a
notification. I have noticed that anything that seems to depend on DCOM
will not start, but it is started. Also the Windows Error Reporting Service
that is listed with no dependancys at all will also not start. And in
services.msc, the dependancys are only viewable in safe mode, in normal
mode, you can not veiw them, or make changes, startup type.. ect it goes
into not repsonding. IE will not launch, most programs just start then hang,

Ive ran checkdisk, no errors, sfc... no errors, memory test.. no erros..

Any ideas other than reinstall, also running installation packages are out,
as no access to windows installer.

Thanks!

I had a co-worker bring her laptop into the office and she had some simular
problems. However, looking at her services at least 90% were not just not
running but disabled. Some could be re-enabled and started and some not.
The lady will take her system to a computer repair facility and let them try
to figure it out and probably re-install her system.

These are not disabled.. just won't start.. I was however able to boot via
diagnostic mode from msconfig and start any service I wanted manually. After
starting most of the essential services, ran msconfig with out reboot into
normal mode, then was able to start the upgrade/repair process... will find
out if it works here in a bit.

I have run into this problem twice. It seems to be something that I do
and not the hardware as it was two different computers.

Anyways... anything that used to require an Admin password now no
longer works... it just hangs.

Also my network connection appears to be down but I am still connected.
I would love to hear what the solution is for this one because it
always happens to me.

We threw it out the window on the 10th floor and then when we picked it up
downstairs and plugged it in then it worked and issue was fixed. Boy oh boy, a real
miracle

Read the following

We have no idea what you are talking about since you did not attach any previous
conversations regarding your issue.

He's replying to a thread started 3/26. He's still an idiot for not
including the original text.
