I get a wrong version error when loading outlook. The Microsoft support says
"rename to mapi32.old" I was able to do this in the Syster32 folder, but not
the file
x_86...............mapi32.exe. What do I have to do to rename this file? I
own the file and have all permissions.

Which version of Outlook? Versions 2003 and more recent are
compatible with Vista, and version 2002 works with a few problems.

Outlook 2003. My computer came with trial versions of Office 2007 which I
think caused this problem. I removed that version before installing Office
2003.

Why are we getting so many Outlook questions in this non-Outlook newsgroup?

Common problem with Outlook 2003 after removing Office 2007 Trial.

1) Navigate to 'Program Files|Common Files|System|MSMAPI|1033'.

2) Find the file MSMAPI32.DLL and rename it to MSMAPI32.OLD.

3) Start Outlook 2003. It should rebuild MSMAPI32.DLL

Note the "Vista.Mail" part in the newsgroup name. It refers to the
Windows Mail program that comes with Vista. I agree that a less generic
name would have been less open to misinterpretation.

The Outlook experts tend to hang out in their own newsgroups:
Outlook questions are better handled in an Outlook newsgroup:

I followed your instructions but:

I spoke too soon. I'm running Vista. The one I cannot rename with all file
permission and ownership is
"x86_microsoft-windows-mapi (a whole bunch of numbers)" That is a folder
name which has the mapi32.exe file.

Outlook 2003 still gives the error message and doesn't rebuild mapi32.exe
