..NET 1.1 SP1 is considered a critical security update and should
be installed. Is there a particular reason why you do not wish to
install this important update?

List of bugs that are fixed in the .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=867460

The primary focus of Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
is improved security. In addition, the service pack includes roll-ups of all
reported customer issues found after the release of the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1.
Of particular note, SP1 provides better support for consuming WSDL documents,
Data Execution prevention and protection from security issues such as buffer overruns.

I do not have a .NET 1.1 SP1 critical update in my list. I do have a
Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1 in the recommended update list. My
understanding of the .NET Framework is that this is some kind of programming
environment, akin to Java, and that it is not necessary to even have it
installed unless there is an application which makes use of it.

Is it in the Critical Updates section? I don't think you can mark a Critical
Update to not be notified in Automatic Updates.

Or is it one of the Recommended Updates? Do those even come up as notices in
Automatic Updates? If you use the Personalize Windows Updates, you should be
able to hide unwanted Recommended Updates.

Many software developers are writing software based on
the .NET Framework. It won't be long before you'll get
a message to install it before installing a new software program
in the future.

Example:

The latest ATI video drivers require the installation of .NET Framework

I think I said something along those lines. As an example, I installed a
Broderbund program on my mom's computer. It asked for .NET Framework; more
specifically, it offered to install it. I cancelled the installation. Not
because I wasn't going to install said program, but because I figured I
would rather get the .NET Framework from the Windows Update site. I did
install the program after grabbing the .NET Framework from Windows Update.

I will do that for my computer when I encounter a program which wants it;
but not one millisecond before then.
