Marked variations in free disk space day-to-day

I have 2 disks (C: and D on my laptop running Vista Ultimate and I have
noticed that during a week the amount of reported free disk space can vary
by as much as 15GB on each drive and yet no substantial file system changes
are taking place during that time. Why would this be so?
