I have Windows Vista Ultimate installed on my custom built pc. I have a
samsung 204b monitor 20.1 inches max resolution 1600x1200. My graphics card
is an nvidia geforce 8600 gts. I have all the latest drivers for monitor and
video card. Why won't vista let me change my resolution to greater then
1024x768? I don't get it. Is this a problem for everyone? Is that the max
resolution vista will allow? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Adding to this post,
If you want to see just what your monitor can do,
Go to Control Panel Home,
Under Appearance and Personalization,
Click Adjust screen resolution,
Advanced settings,
List all Modes.
It will show you a list of Valid modes that your monitor is capable of,
Highlight the one you want to use and click OK.

Vista can handle much much more than 1024x768, it is dependant on your video
card and driver. I run three monitors at 1280x1024 each and a friend of mine
has an Apple 30" monitor running at 2560x1600 native. You might want to try
a different video driver for your card.

I am running 1680x1050 on a cheap ass Geforce 7350 LE, running Vista
Home Premium; so yes you should be able to run at a higher res.
However given you are running the latest drivers I am not sure what to
tell you. You might verify that the drivers are in effect via Device
Manager, check both the video card and that Vista sees your monitor.
