I've a few contacts abroad who insist they are online, even though it says
for me, they are offline. Sometimes we can exchange messages, but usually
our messages are unable to go through. This problem started 2 or 3 days ago,
at seemingly random intervals. I've tried fresh installs and all that jazz
to no avail. Neither of us are 'appear offline', and i've noticed many other
contacts displayed by their email only. Is this a server-side problem or my
problem? Her other contacts are able to see and contact her fine, as are
mine. We just have this problem between us. Any ideas?

I noted a similar issue with one of my contacts yesterday afternoon and this
morning.

He appeared offline to me even though he was online.

I appeared offline to him even though I was online.

Other contacts appeared as they normally do.

I seriously hope this can be fixed..it's getting worse. 75% of my contacts
are now email-only displayed. Isn't there some number available I can call?

Jonathan posted about this to his blog today:
http://messengergeek.spaces.live.com...DA1!2607.entry

"Over the past 24-hours or so, it appears the Messenger servers have become
desynchronized (or otherwise broken) and among other problems, are not reporting
status information correctly. So you’ll see contacts with a display name of
just their e-mail address, contacts online when they’re not, contacts offline
when they’re not, and problems messaging between these contacts.

Normally these problems get resolved pretty quickly and signing out/sign in
fixes the problem. Unfortunately In this case, it hasn’t proven to be very
effective and these issues have been persisting.

Hopefully it will be resolved soon."

Hi,

Could you be more specific? The odd contact appearing offline while actually being there is a
long-term issue which is resolvable.

The servers are back to their normal state to the best of my knowledge.

Two contacts, both located in Argentina frequently appear offline to me
despite being online. Occasionally they can respond, and sometimes I will
see them online and be able to talk with them. Other times they are offline
and no messages get through, regular or offline messages. At that point in
time, nothing seems to work. I have been unable to fix this problem despite
clearing caches/reinstalls/whatever it takes. Not running any antivirus
either.

Hi RIZN,

I'm not aware of any problems, I also have Argentinean contacts and they frequently are
signed out and back in just because of their Internet connection (they're also signed out of
other services as well besides Messenger).

If you really think this is a server problem, you can re-establish your relationship them in
Messenger. To do so, both you and them need to remove each other from your contact lists.
After you've done that, press the Alt key on the keyboard, then Tools, then Options, and then
choose the Privacy category. Find them on the Allow list, right-click on them and choose the
Delete option there. If the Delete option is grayed out then they've not removed you yet or
its not yet refreshed (sign out and back in to force that to happen). After they've been
fully removed, re-add them to your contact list.
