Using MCE 2005 on XP (SP 3). Always used to be able to burn DVDs from
recorded TV via InterVideo WinDVD. But that stopped working. So I tried the
"Create CD/DVD" program in MCE. About 30% of the way into the burn I get an
error message, "Create Failure. An error has occured in creating the
CD/DVD", and the DVD ejects and the burn process ends.

Microsoft has a hotfix for this error (Microsoft Support Article ID: 894553)
if the error happens at 0% - 5% of the burn (but I get beyond 5% to about
30%).

Questions: 1) Any suggestions / fixes concering WinDVD or the MCE error? 2)
Should I try the Hotfix or is that playing with fire?

By default Windows Media Center 2005 uses Sonic encoder.

As you are using InterVideo WinDVD so You should update InterVideo WinDVD.
Make sure there is no insufficient or highly fragmented free disk space as
they can contribute to DVD writing errors.

Sometimes the recorded file may be causing the problem, converting it to
another format can allow it to be written.

Yes, you may try the hotfix ;ref:-
