I have just upgraded my 4 year old laptop from ME to XP Home Edition.
Thia appears to have made everything extremely slow. Is this a common
problem, and, if so, what do I do to solve it?

No, it is not a common problem. How much RAM do you have installed?
Did you defrag your drive?
