Media Center in Vista locks computer

After loading the windows updates last week, almost every time I run windows
media center it locks my computer and I have to power it off and restart. I
attempted to undo the updates by using system restore but it returns saying
there were errors trying to restore and nothing was changed. After restarting
computer about 3 or 4 times media center plays correctly and doesn't lock the
whole computer.

There's several things to try here.
Try updating your video drivers from the manufacturer's website.
Check your Event Viewer for errors in the Application and System section of
the Windows Logs (Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes)
and press Enter) to see if there's any errors related to the "locking" of the
computer (check the time stamps to verify this). Let us know what you find
and we can work from there.

These are the errors associated with the timestamp where the computer locked.
There are 2 separate entries.

The performance strings in the Performance registry value is corrupted when
process Performance extension counter provider. The BaseIndex value from the
Performance registry is the first DWORD in the Data section, LastCounter
value is the second DWORD in the Data section, and LastHelp value is the
third DWORD in the Data section.

Unloading the performance counter strings for service WmiApRpl (WmiApRpl)
