I had the exact same thing happen and I have the solution that worked for me.
Took me two months of resetting group policies and all that other junk....
Turns out I had installed a video player that had assumed the default
position for my media player... As soon as I put media player back to the
default, I no longer got the group policy error, and both media player and
media center are working fine.
Start-default programs-set program access and computer defaults-select
microsoft windows and make sure media player is the default with access to
media center and any other viseo programs you want to use.
