The installation of the downloaded update you should try in normal mode,
maybe you can delete the update you are trying to install first from the add
remove programs and than give it a try? If that does not work there is
nothing more to try than the repair oprion, since you probably have
disabeled system restore and have no back up of the partition which has the
problem.
The repair option (after pressing F8 to agree on the licence) will repair
your windows installation levaing all programs which are installed intact,
however as I said before you will have to get all the windows updates in and
installed again.
If your documents are on the C: operating drive and your e-mail store folder
as well I would just to be sure back those up to another parttition or a
writable media.
