No matter what I do the advanced tag editor won't let me edit inform ation.
Everything is grayed out. The files are not protected, nor read only. I can
alter the info in other programs, but can't do anything within media player.
Even Windows Media Center will change the information (but boy is that
awkward). Obviously I am doing something wrong.

Which WMP and Windows version? Is WMP able to play the files? What's the
file type (MP3, WMA...)?

If you right-click one of these files in Explorer and select Properties,
can you edit the information there, on the Summary page?
