I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3 and have windows media player 11 installed on
my system. I am having trouble playing any vidoes with the .wmv file
extension. upon trying to play one of these videos I window pops up says
that windows media player has encountered a problem and needs to close, then
media player shuts down.

I've tried rolling back to media player 9 and 10; and tried reinstalling
media player 11. I've even tried using Real player to play these files but
still get the same result. I've concluded that it is most likely something
with the operating system but not sure.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to correct this problem? Has anyone
encountered this before? Any help is appreciated. Thank you

hi,
just to tell u that i have the same problem with AVI files and WMP 11 --
same error message -- i also tried to roll back -no success. my problem
started following installations of video converting programs so i assume it
has something to do with competability. If you find a solution, pls update.
good luck!

Is this Windows XP as well? What video converting programs did you

Dear Tim,
Yes win XP SP-2.
Programs installed and then uninstalled: AVStoDVD, dvdflick, dvd-converter,
Avi2Dvd, freeVideoConverter, free_mkv_dvd, vsoConverteXtoDVD
I tried to locate the event thru Admin tools- not sure this is the right one:
Fault bucket 337816799.
BTW, it's only AVI formats my WMP can't locate. these files disapeared also
from the file list when I file>open > file of type in WMP
pls read my detailed post above: "Windows Media Player 11 encountered a
problem"
Thanks

Neil,
Thank you so very much for helping me out with my player problems. I did
the system file checker and that fixed the problem. My media player now
works fine.

Hi Neil

I having the same problem. Tried you solution and sfc is asking for the
installation CD. I do not have an installation CD since:

1) My machine has an OEM version of Media Centre 2005
2) Windows XP SP3 was released and my machine updated vie Windows Update.

I tried creating an installation CD for XP SP3 as specified on the Windows
support page but it seems like all the files are located in some form of
compressed format and sfc can read them. At least it keeps reporting that the
CD is the wrong onre.

I'm kind of lost as to what to do.

I think this issue was caused by my anti-virus software called F-Secure that
erroneously wiped out some component of Windows XP.

Try removing WMP and reinstalling it. You should be able to find the WMP
install package at the Microsoft Downloads website.
