Media Player preventing WMDC to start

Hello,

I have been working with Abdulkadar on an issue I am having with WMDC and
thought I'd share the issue. Perhaps someone has found a fix for this. I
found the problem I am having with WMDC not connecting to my PPC. It has to
do with Windows Media Player 11 disabling WMDC. I have Vista Ultimate x64.
Here is how I discovered the problem.

I launched taskmanager to see what processes were starting when connecting
my device. Without WMDC running, I connected my device and saw wmplayer.exe
launch as I heard the USB connection sound and then stop as I heard the USB
disconnect sound. With WMDC running, I connected my device again. I see
mwdc.exe running. Then wmdhost.exe starts followed by wmplayer.exe as the
USB connection sound comes through. Then wmplayer.exe closes, and I hear
the USB disconnect sound. wmdc.exe and wmdhost.exe are still running with
no connection to my device. I repeated ths process. This time I tried to
shutdown wmplayer.exe by using end process button. When I was able to stop
it in time, my device connected. This was done several times. When I
couldn't stop wmplayer.exe in time, my device did not connect. Also, with
the device connected, I launched Windows Media Player, and it disconnected
my device. The problem is wmplayer.exe is not allowing my PPC to connect to
my PC. It looks like it is causing wmdhost.exe to time out or disconnect.

How can I fix this?

My driver is dated as of 2/27/07. WMP always comes on. Per my post, I can
only connect my device if I end the process manually and in time.

There is no autoplay tab when this is done. I even changed the autoplay
options in control panel to ask. For now, unless someone has a fix, I'm
going to have to disable wmplayer.exe in time so that my device connects.
WMDC sucks, and Activesync was much better. I never had problems with it.
WMDC is a pain in the behind.

I just love these forums and appreciate everyone who posts! Unfortunately,
it takes a village to debug WMDC...

I've been struggling with WMDC also but am getting a different error when I
cradle my Sprint 6700 Mobile 5.0 PPC -- WMDC Sync Host Has Stopped Working.
I tried Jasper's idea and went into Control Panel, set my Pocket PC to "Take
No Action" for Auto Play, and even tried to rename the wmplayer.exe, but it
still comes up when I cradle my PPC. My fingers aren't as fast as Mark's
and I haven't been able to stop it from coming up. I believe you guys are
on to the culprit...

After WMDC Host stops, I can browse the PPC but can't initiate a sync.

If there are other ideas to try, let 'em fly and I'll try them...

Thanks much for your support,
Lon

Thanks, Jasper!

I took out the mini-SD card, rebooted the PC, did a soft reset on the PPC,
cradled the PPC and got the same error.

Keep thinking!

Lon

I have the same device as Lon except mine is with Verizon (xv6700). WMP
does not even recognize the device when I connect it. I also tried with the
storage card removed and no luck there.

Lon, you don't have to be quick to end wmplayer.exe. Connect your device
and have task manager open. Have the mouse over the end process button.
Have 1 finger of the same hand on the down arrow and another on the enter
key. Wmplayer.exe will start once then disappear. It will then start up
again as wmdhost.exe starts. Use the down arrow to get to it, hit your
mouse button to activate end process, then hit return. It might take a
couple of tries but you'll get it.

It's a shame we have to resort to this.

Jasper:

I don't think there's much here that lends a clue... there are two tabs on
this dialog. I don't have playlists setup on WMP and didn't choose to have
it synch initially. Maybe that's the problem. This time I opened WMP
first, then cradled the PPC, and got the same error. Gotta love the
consistency, right?

On the Sync tab on the dialog, I have UNchecked "Start synch when device
connects", and checked "Create Folder Hierarchy on Device". On the other
Quality tab, the options concern quality levels for music and video. These
don't seem to apply to this problem...

I'll try Mark's idea about killing WMP and see if that works for me...

Thanks again,
Lon

Mark:

You've either got faster fingers or a slower PC -- I can't interrupt it.
However, in my testing I was able to generate an Unhandled Exception. I'll
paste the text in here because I can't upload a file -- it says a 67K file
is too large.

HTH,
Lon

The screenshot said the following:

Microsoft .NET Framework (in the title bar)

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception

Mark:

You've either got faster fingers or a slower PC -- I can't interrupt it.
However, in my testing I was able to generate an Unhandled Exception. I'll
paste the text in here because I can't upload a file -- it says a 67K file
is too large. [This is the second time trying to post this so I deleted all
the previous threads below...]

HTH,
Lon

The screenshot said the following:

Microsoft .NET Framework (in the title bar)

Unhandled exception has occurred in your application...

Retrieving the COM class factory for component with the CLSID
{89108EE5-18DA-11DB-9617-00E08161165F} failed due to the following error:

Here are the details in the dialog:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.
