You cannot install a standalone version of the *XP* Media Player upon Vista.
Why can't it be killed using Task Manager?
Rebooting should stop it. If it's starting up again, something is telling
it to. Is there a device attached to the system... ?

Same. Media Player does not open and no error is shown. But there is a
wmplayer.exe process with 10,180 K of memory that cannot be killed.
Any ideas?
