When I doubled my memory from 2GB to 4GB

But Computer -> properties reports 1.87GB same as before the upgrade
I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002

Does your motherboard support more than 2GB of ram? Stupid question but got
to ask.

Sorry, just re-read your post. If bios see's it, OS may be corrupt. Try
repair re-install if all else fails. This has been the easy fix for me in
the past.

Also check bios settings for shared graphics memory, (although I've never
heard of it taking a full 2 gigs, not to mention I don't think I've seen any
bios's that even allow for that much allocation).

32 or 64 bit sys and os? Although 32 bit WILL recognize 4 GB though so
that's not the issue.

Hope this helps slightly.

Actually a 32-bit system will show a maximum of approx 3 - 3.5 gig of memory
(usually it show around 3.2).

Brian,
What graphic card do you have and how much onboard memory does it have?
Do you have any other peripherals that have their own onboard memory?
What OS service packs do you have installed for you XP based MCE system?
