Memory Upgrade

Hi,
I recently added a 2 GB memory stick to my system to make a total of 4 GB. I
installed as the motherboard manual instructed. The BIOS recognizes the new
memory but Vista Ultimate (32-bit) only sees 3326 MB (3.4 GB). I checked
Windows Update to see if there was an update to solve the problem. It tries
to install KB929777 which continually fails with code 8000FFFF. Any
suggestions?

That's expected...have a look at the following article:

Hi,
Just read the article. I don't quite understand the explanation. It
says the max 32 bit Vista can use is 3.12GB. Yey my system has 4G
installed & Vista (32-bit) reports 3581MB.

Any ideas why I seem to have a bit extra?

Hello Gudmund,

Read the posts before, it is not a problem. 32bit versions can not handle
more from the 4GB, it's by design. If you install the 64 bit version you
see the full 4GB.

Hi,

It's not a hard and fast number, note the articles states "typically 3.12
GB" - meaning this is a common figure. The actual amount seen depends on the
hardware involved and the number of addresses required and can vary greatly.
I've seen some systems with as little as 2.79GB remaining available. Yours
is on the opposite end of the spectrum.

All 32-bit versions of Windows, even though they have a 4GB address
space, can only use *around* 3.1GB of RAM. That's because some of that
space is used by hardware and not available to the operating system
and applications. The amount you can use varies, depending on what
hardware you have installed, but is usually around 3.1GB. But I've
seen numbers as high as 3.5GB.

To use that much memory, you need to go to the 64-bit version.

Sorry to jump in, but I am having the same issue with the installation of
KB929777.

When I upgraded my system to 4gig this update became available via our WSUS.
The problem is that it fails every time I try to install it with the same
error code as reported.

I have since downloaded the actual hotfix to my system and ran it from
there. It still wont install and continues to haunt my available updates
dialog box.

A user on the web said he got around the issue and was able to install it by
removing 2 gig of ram or as in his case using a command prompt to force Vista
to not see all but 512mb of ram on the system. I tried removing one stick and
bringing the system down to 2gig but no luck.

Error from install via WSUS...
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with
error 0x8000ffff: Update for Windows (KB929777).

If I install in manually with the hotfix downloaded to my system I get this...

Windows Servicing started a process of changing package KB929777(Update)
state from Default(Default) to Installed(Installed)

Then...

Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of changing update
929777-1_RTM_LDR from package KB929777(Update) into Install Requested(Install
Requested) state

It is interesting that my system also sees a lot more ram than several other
systems I have looked at, 3582mb under 32bit Vista.
