Message Rules oddity

Something odd has happened with the WLM Message Rules:

A month ago, I had 2 rules set to block 2 names.
All worked as it should.

Today I removed the rules, now there is nothing listed in the Message Rules
list.
I re-booted. and restarted WLM.

I looked for posts by one of the unblocked names, they can't be found (I
know they're there, I can see them on the laptop, running XP)
Instead I get this message:
------
"WLM was unable to retrieve the requested message.
It's possible the message has expired or was removed from the server."
"430 no such article found.
Configuration:
Account Microsoft Communities
Server msnews.microsoft.com"
-------
This is not possible, the message rules were not set in Microsoft
Communities, but in the Corel news server which has nothing to do with
Microsoft.
How did MS get in on the action?

I have Googled before posting here, but can't find anyone else with the same
problem (they might exist, but I didn't see them).

How do I get back to normal?

Thanks for any help.

Grenou (running Windows 7 & WLM on de desktop)

Check how old the message is on the laptop. MSNews only keeps messages on
the server for 90 days. If it is older than that, it should disappear from
the laptop next time you sync that newsgroup.

The messages are between 2 and 10 days old.

I'm not sure what happened, but I think the rule issue is a coincidence.
Your message rules only remove posts from your computer, not the server
and thus would not be responsible for the error message. You could try
resetting the newsgroup.

While in a newsgroup: View | Current View. Make sure Show All Messages and
Group Messages By Conversation are checked.

Tools | Options | Read. Uncheck: Get XXX headers at a time. Then, right
click on the newsgroup in the Folder Tree | Properties | Local File |
Reset. Switch to another folder and then back and all available messages
will be downloaded again.

Or go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Clean Up Now and choose the
group, or server at the top and then Reset.

It would be a good idea to compact your folders when you're done.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything
until the compacting is completed.

My personal preference is to disregard synchronizing and rather have OE
check for news when it checks for mail. Tools | Accounts | News. Check: "
Include this account...........".

I use Window Live Mail, not Outlook Express

I have already done all you have suggested, without any success.

Thanks for responding, I'll keep trying.

What did the original message rules say?

Or were you using Block Sender in the Safety Options?

How are you looking for the posts for the unblocked names?

If you want to start over in a newsgroup, in the folder list Right click
the newsgroup, select Properties, Local File and then RESET. That will
make it as if you had never visited the newsgroup before and WLM will
redownload the newsgroup.

It's almost the same as OE. Right click on the newsgroup | Properties |
Local File | Reset.

Bingo, the blocked senders list is the one I hadn't looked in!
All names now removed.

Now to get rid of 29.898 posts..

Thanks very much for your assistance.

PS: I now know why I used the Blocked Senders option, the message rules
don't work.
Oh such fun.

Sure they do. For News:

Where the From line contains people
Delete it & Stop processing more rules
Click on Contains and add the address

That has the exact same results as Blocked Senders does when used in news.
Perhaps you didn't have Stop processing more rules checked? Or the display
name instead of the address?
