Message: User profile service failed the logon

My son has Vista Home Basic and has received the message: 'User profil
service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded' when he turn
on his computer

I've looked at all of the possible solutions on this website but al
assume that we can access the start menu - which we cannot. What can w
do if we cannot get past this point? What means do we have to go t
system restore or other methods
