Just to clarify, do you mean all messages or just the initial message when you start a
conversation? The latter is known and expected but otherwise it should be relatively
instant.
However, Messenger supports two different modes of operation. One of these is called HTTP
mode which works much diffidently than the normal mode, especially in how it checks for
messages and you might see this few seconds delay behavior. You can check to see if you've
been pushed into this mode by opening any Messenger window, pressing the Alt key on the
keyboard to open up the menu bar, choosing Tools, then Options, then the Connection category.
After a few more seconds to allow it to collect the data, it should should whether you are in
HTTP mode or direct mode.
