Well I was playing with a registry fix tool on my home Vista machine an
not thinking, I ran it on my work XP machine. Stupid me .... I have
few errors but the biggest thing seems to be my TCP/IP stack is hosed
I can't get a DHCP address assigned either wireless or wired. I have n
network connectivity. The machine is a IBM Thinkpad and I don't hav
systems disks as it came pre-installed and is probably on some hidde
partition or something. OS is XP Professional ... any idea what m
options are? I feel like such a dufus

First check if the registry tool has an undo option, many do.
Otherwise try System Restore to a Date/Time before you made the
changes:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.

In the future be careful with such tools especially if you are using
someone else's computer.
I suggest not using those tools for reasons such as this and they
seldom return any noticeable results.
If you do use them, you must become familiar with them so you are
already prepared for such an event.
You should also be familiar enough so you can recognize if the key
recommended for deletion is necessary or not.
Do not blindly delete something just because some tool said it was OK.
It is your computer and you reap the benefits or suffer the
consequences, not the registry tools manufacturer.

Hi Beckp--

The first 3 things I'd try is to run SFC , also reregister some .dlls, and
reset your TCP/IP.

I'm going to show you how to do those. They should get you connected back
to the net.

To run SFC, simply put up your run box and type in "sfc /scannow" (lose
quotes).

SFC scans thousands of files and .dlls, and replaces corrupt ones with
intact ones from a storage place in XP called DLLcache. Vista's SFC is
somewhat different actually, as to its the way it works althought the
principle is quite the same, but we're not talking Vista here.

I want you then to reregister .dlls according to this MSKB (don't fret that
the title isn't your exact set of circumstances):

The new window that you open in Internet Explorer displays a blank white pag
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;902932

Then I want you to follow this MSKB to reset your TCP/IP stack:

How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

If these don't fix your situation, I'd use the F8 options for System Restore
as described below and Last Known Good if they don't work. If the F8
options don't work, and you are fortunate enough to have an XP CD, I'd do a
repair install. Instructions are below:

***Using the F8 Environment***

***Taking Full Advantage of the F8 Options (Windows Advanced Options Menu)
by starting the PC and tapping F8 once per second when the firmware screen
with the pc manufacturer's name shows a few seconds after restarting***:

The F8 options in Vista are the same as XP, and the link for Safe Mode Boot
options is labled XP by MSFT but they are the same for Vista (they haven't
updated to add Vista to the title as they have with several MSKBs that apply
to both).

Again, pressing F8 repeatedly when you seem the firmware screen may be is a
generic way to launch Windows RE on some OEM Vista computers.

You could also:

Think: I have 4 different ways to get back my XP at F8 and try 'em in order.
1) Safe Mode 2) Safe Mode with Cmd to Sys Restore which is simply a cmd
prompt in safe mode 3) Safe Mode with Neworking 4) LKG or Last Known Good
Configuration

Try to F8 to the Windows Adv Options Menu>try 3 safe modes there (I don't
use WGA) and Last Known Good>then I go to Win RE in Vista. That gives you a
choice of Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, and Safe Mode with Command
Prompt.

These methods are outlined in

A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP/and Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding System Restore from MSFT:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../faqsrwxp.mspx

System Restore can be run from the Win RE recovery environment from the same
link as Startup Repair, and sometimes it will work from one F8 safe mode
location or from the Win Recovery Environment when it won't work from other
locations.

Beckp--

Since you can boot to Windows XP, it's not necessary to use the F8 options
when and if you try system restore, just try restore points to before you
used the reg tool as Jupiter said. As to registry clean tools, I strongly
advise never to use them. I don't care what anyone says--they don't know
what the hell they are really doing and all that errors corrected stuff is
not ever documented by them.

Ed Bott gives very solid advice on all things computer, besides writing the
XP and Vista Inside Out books for MSFT press (and a future indepth book on
Vista) and here's Ed's view of reg clean tools:

Hi,

Try rebuilding the TCP/IP stack with the netsh command. Click start/run and
type CMD, then click ok. From the prompt, run:

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

Then close the prompt and reboot the machine.
